School's Out!!!

If you're a teacher then you know that this is way more exciting for the teachers than it is for the kids.  It is especially exciting for me because I have decided NOT to work this summer!!! That being said, please don't think I've been sitting around reading novels and taking afternoon naps...I wish!  I am still in grad school, so I am taking this summer to take classes and complete an internship.  Luckily, my internship is flexible so I can work there every other week. That way when we have the kids I take care of them and we don't have to pay the outrageous cost of summer camps. Because I knew I would have the kids everyother week I started thinking and planning months ago of ways to keep them entertained without breaking the budget.  I started by making a list of ideas and then I fit them into our summer calendar around our vacations and planned trips.  Then, I stole a fabulous idea from my sister-in-law.  She also had made a calendar for her kids but she made a paper chain that they could pull the last chain off each day.  On each chain is an idea/activity for the day. So began what Justin calls "The Summer Chain of Events".  I think it's a pretty cute name.

Each morning the kids are with us, they wake up and come running to their "chain of events" to see what they day's activity is.  Let me correct that... each morning they run downstairs to the chain and argue about whose turn it is to pull off the chain.  After that is decided they ooohhh and aaahhh over the activity for the day.  So here is a run down of our first week (June 6th - 12th).

Monday, Day 1: Let's go the library, get our own library cards, and check out books!

They each got their own library card and library bag. McKayla got three books and Seth got four.  We have decided to go back every Tuesday.  The kids got an extra surprise that night.  Justin took us all to Lofty Pursuits for icecream and the kids got their faces painted.

Tuesday, Day 2: Let's make some yummy home made popsicles for dessert.  We did make our popsicles in the morning and eat them for dessert but I forgot to take pictures of them.

Wednesday, Day 3: How tall are you? We measured our heights and we will measure them again at the end of the summer to see how much we grew. McKayla is 48 1/4" and Seth is 43 1/2" tall.

Thursday, Day 4: Let's make some home made pizzas for dinner!  That's just what we did...

Friday, Day 5: Let's plant some flowers and watch them grow!

Saturday, Day 6: We're making dessert for Ms. Meghan and Mr. Jeremy's Party!!! Again, I forgot to take pictures.  We made home made chocolate chip cookies, white chocolate island cookies, and sugar cookies. Yummy!

Sunday, Day 7: Going to Lake Ella to feed the ducks.

I would love to tell you what else is to come in our "summer chain of events" but that's top secret.  Stay tuned and you'll get to find out!
